Shopping for a dildo isn’t always easy, especially for the first time.

The price aside, you’ll need to choose the right size. But what’s the best dildo size? What’s too small or too large?

I’ve analyzed data from sex experts, dildo users, and sex toy stores and made some interesting conclusions that I’ll share with you today.

Key Takeaways

  • Most people prefer dildos measuring at least 6 inches.
  • Dildos measuring less than 5 inches are not so popular in the market.
  • Things to look for when measuring a dildo: width, circumference, total length, and insertable length.
  • The world’s largest dildo was spotted in California.

Dildo Size Definition

Dildo size refers to the physical measurements of a dildo, usually in terms of length and girth.

How is Dildo Size Measured?

The first thing you need to know is that dildos can hurt your ego if you’re a man. This is because a standard dildo might seem larger than an average penis. Numerous studies have found that the average dildo size is anywhere between 4 to 6 inches.

The first time I bought a dildo, I was looking for something no longer than 5 inches. This is because my boyfriend’s dick is around that size, the average penis size.

“With respect to penile length, average penile size is 8.91 cm (3.51 inch) in the flaccid state.”

by Nam Cheol Park, Sae Woong Kim, Du Geon Moon; Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016
from Penile Augmentation

But what arrived in the mail isn’t the same as what I had ordered (in terms of size). And even though the packaging clearly stated that the phallus measured 5 inches, it wasn’t (or at least that’s what I thought).

I could see the insecurity on my boyfriend’s face even though he didn’t want to admit it at the time.

This got me thinking: how do they measure dildos? Why do dildos always seem larger than actual penises, even those with similar measurements?

While researching for answers, I came across this Quora thread, proving that I wasn’t the only one struggling with this question. After further research, here’s what I discovered:

Unlike penises, dildos don’t come attached to a man. For this reason, dildo manufacturers extend the size of the toy by a few inches to provide the user with a platform to grip it during insertion.

Secondly, because dildos don’t lose their erections as penises do, it’s much easier to measure their true length. Thirdly, there’s also another thing known as insertable length, which hugely influences the overall size of a dildo. We’ll discuss that shortly.

There are four key factors to consider when determining the size of a dildo, as explained below.

1. Total Length

This is the entire length of the dildo, from the tip to the base. To measure the total length, place the dong on a flat surface, and place one end of the measuring tape at the base and the other at the tip.

2. Insertable Length

As the name suggests, this refers to only the part of the dildo designed for penetration. It starts at the end of the shaft and all the way to the tip of the penis. You can use a measuring tape to measure the insertable length, just as you would for the total length.

3. Diameter

Also known as the width, this is the size of the toy’s surface at the widest length. Place a measuring tape across the widest part of the phallus to obtain its diameter.

4. Circumference

A dong’s circumference is the distance around the widest point. To obtain the circumstance, wrap a tape measure around the artificial dick until you’re back to the starting point.

What Kind of Dildo Sizes Exists?

Dildos come in different sizes, mainly between 4 inches to 12 FEET. Yes, you read that right!

Pipedream Products, a sex toy company in California, actually erected what’s considered the world’s largest dildo, measuring 12 feet and 4 inches, as a promotion for its products. Of course, no one would dare fuck this larger-than-life monster, but it just shows you how big dildos can get.

If you’re looking for fuckable monster phalluses, check out the Sexflesh Moby 3 Foot Tall Super Dildo from Master Cock. That’s 36 inches!

The bottom line is that there’s no limit to the size of a dildo. So whether you want something as small as 4 inches or want to take a trip to California to meet the giant from Pipedream Products, the choice is yours.

What’s the Best-Selling Dildo Size? Has It Changed Over the Years?

There’s no doubt that size matters. That’s something I know all too well as a woman. Of course, you don’t want something too small, but also, for most women, oversized dildos aren’t just their thing.

That said, what’s the best size?

Personally, I love anything between 6 to 8 inches. That’s actually close enough to the results from the largest dildo survey conducted by Sextopedia.

The survey was conducted between October 2021 and July 2022 and involved 2468 participants. From the results, most participants, at least 73%, preferred dildos measuring between 6 to 7 inches. That translates to 15.2 centimeters to 17.8 centimeters.

Another study from Lovehoney, one of the largest online sex toy manufacturers on the market, revealed that the preferred dildo size was 6 inches. The study further revealed that users rarely settled for less than anything measuring 5 inches.

So should we draw the line at 5 inches, then?

Not really. It’s a matter of preference.

But, if I’m going to buy anything less than 5 inches, I’d rather fuck a human and save my money.

A Brief Overview of Previous Dildo Size Survey Results

While researching dildo sizes, I came across some interesting survey results worth sharing:

  • Lovehoney survey concluded that at least 15% of users preferred dildos measuring 10.5 inches (approximately 25.4 centimeters).
  • The study further revealed that 36.9% of respondents preferred a dildo’s girth, 32.5% preferred length, and 22.8% settled for remote-controlled versions.
  • According to the study, there was a slight change in preferences among Lovehoney customers. In 2019, most users preferred 6-inch dildos. In 2018, the users preferred dildos measuring 5.5 to 6.5 inches.
  • Our in-house survey revealed that less than 5% of users preferred dildos measuring more than 8 inches.

Dildo Sizing Guide (Step-By-Step Explained)

Here are additional tips to help you choose a dildo that best suits your sexual needs:

Take it easy at first. Begin with a size that’s close to the average size of the penis, but no longer than 6 inches. You can then upgrade later if the need arises. I love the size and smooth texture of the Lovehoney Curved Silicone Suction Cup Dildo 5.5 Inch, one of the best dildos for beginners.

Conduct extensive research on the internet to find out what other users are saying about different dildo sizes. You can start at a forum like Reddit and then head over to reputable sellers like Lovehoney or Mr. Hankey’s Toys to check out the different dildos (and sizes) available.

Don’t fall for a dildo’s description; this could be a marketing tactic. Rather, check out its specifications in terms of length and girth.

Always consider the insertable length, not the total length of the dildo. This is because insertable length is what goes inside you, not the whole dildo.

Also, consider the firmness levels of the dildo. If you’re still a beginner, don’t go for one that’s too firm. Rather, choose a medium-firm version. It will feel more gentle inside you and is also easier to ride

Lastly, don’t buy dildos that are too soft. They tend to bend inside the vagina and are even more frustrating to ride.

There’s so much you’ll need to learn when looking for the right dildo for you or your partner. Other than size, you’ll also need to consider the brand, affordability, ability-to-induce orgasms, durability, safety, material, texture, color, functions, etc.

That said, here’s a more detailed guide on buying the perfect dildo for you.

Dildo Size FAQs

What Big Dildo Size is Too Big?

The answer to this question depends on your preferences. However, results from dildo surveys can give you a rough idea of the size most users aren’t comfortable with.

For example, according to a Sextopedia survey involving 2468 participants, less than 5% preferred dildos measuring more than 8 inches.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that 8-inch dildos are considered too big. Rather, it shows where most people begin to draw the line in this debate. That, right there, is the sweet spot.

What’s the World’s Biggest Dildo?

The unofficial world’s biggest dildo was constructed in 2016 by Pipedream Products, a California-based sex toy company. The giant phallus measured 12 feet and 4 inches and was used to promote the company’s products at a sex toy convention held in Burbank, California.

What’s the World’s Smallest Dildo?

A Reddit user posted what appeared to be the ‘world’s smallest dildo’. Although it’s not officially recognized as such, it’s unlikely that the microscopic dildo will have a worthy competitor anytime soon.

What Size Dildo Do Women and Men Prefer?

Multiple studies have shown that most women prefer 6-inch dildos.

How Many Women Use Large Dildos?

There is no definite answer to this question. However, the Sextopedia survey showed that 30% of the 2468 participants preferred dildos measuring 7 inches, which is a larger size.
